Coda Quell was Valkyrie's combat teacher and ex-boyfriend. He taught her martial arts and how to command her power in Colorado. He is mentioned when Militsa asked Valkyrie where she found someone better than Skulduggery. In Bedlam, Valkyrie recalls calming techniques Coda taught her when Doctor Whorl visited her cell. He is later confirmed in Dead or Alive to be a Ripper and several of the chapters show their interactions and their relationship.
He later breaks the relationship off but comes to realize that he's in love with Valkyrie. He's also the individual who assassinates Damocles Creed and later tries to kill Skullduggery and Valkyrie, putting the former in a very bad position. At the end of the book, he tries to kill Militsa believing her to be an obstacle to his desire to get back with Valkyrie. He himself is killed by the death field set up earlier after Militsa Gnosis sends him flying due to being empowered by the effects of the Féile na Draíochtha.
