Conor Delaney is possibly responsible for one of the many ways the world could end on the 21st December 2012.
Conor was, according to at least one unnamed sorcerer, part of a bloodline who were all a conduit for an idea. Specifically, a random button that may result in the world's destruction, according to some Sensitives.
Biography[]
- "You don’t... you don’t know. You don't know what it was like, seeing her... seeing what happened to her. Seeing how bad it got."
- — Conor Delaney
History[]
Conor was a troubled sort, suffering from strange dreams his entire life that compelled him to think constantly about how to assemble this "button". When he was ten years old, his mother sat him down and sadly told him that the dreams would just get worse, and that they would soon consume his life.
And sure enough, they did. His constant thinking about it and lack of focus in real life would go on to: cause him to fail at finishing school; stop him from holding down a job; and cost him the dear love of his ex-girlfriend Cathy. At some unknown point, his mother was also taken to asylum, just like her ancestors before her.
The Button[]
As the 21st of December, 2012, arrived, there was a breakthrough. The device was finished, and if Conor could just press it the dreams would stop. It would be finished, and he could finally live a normal life. This would, of course, potentially result in the world's destruction. Skulduggery Pleasant and Valkyrie Cain then got involved in the story. After telling him of the Sensitives' visions, despite his incredulity, he was convinced to give them the box and not press it.
Alas, this came at great cost to the man. While the world may have been saved, this meant that he would no doubt continue to feel the urge to press the button.
Powers and abilities[]
- "It isn't madness you're suffering from. My friend, the friend that’s out there right now fighting on your front lawn, told me what you are. You're a conduit for an idea, an idea that was planted centuries ago. It’s grown inside the minds of your ancestors, been added to, been improved... and here tonight, it’s finally ready."
- — Valkyrie Cain
Just like presumably everyone else in his family, Conor was a mortal and had no knowledge of the magical world. However, much to his detriment, he and his entire bloodline were cursed with the knowledge of the blueprints for a button that may cause the end of the world. Neither Conor himself nor likely any of his relatives actually had any idea what the button would do.
These visions caused his mother and presumably all of her ancestors to be taken to various asylums, and consumed their lives. At least once, he lost tract of the time and found out days had passed while he had found himself working on the button.
The obligation he felt to the device would cause him to be able to resist Skulduggery's use of his Given Name, in an attempt to forcibly remove Conor from the thing.
Personality[]
- "It’s just a box, I'm telling you. It doesn't do anything. I’m not a scientist or an engineer. I’m just a man. I’m just ordinary. I wouldn't know how to build anything that would hurt people. I don't want to hurt anyone. I just want to be able to walk away."
- — Conor Delaney
Conor, as mentioned earlier, suffered from visions, which he was desperate to get rid of. However, he would prove to ultimately have a heroic heart, when he gave the button to Skulduggery and Valkyrie instead of pressing it and both ridding himself of the visions and possibly dooming existence as we know it.
Conor desired nothing more than to live a normal life, which for woes he has been denied.
Trivia[]
- He was named Liam Delaney in the micro version of The Button on Derek's blog, but his name was later changed to Conor Delaney in Armageddon Outta Here.
