The Last of the Ancients is the last member of the Ancients, who were the first sorcerers. Valkyrie’s great-grandfather adamantly claimed his family were descendants of them.

According to legend, after the Ancients created the Sceptre of the Ancients and used them to drive away the Faceless Ones, they turned on each other, using the Sceptre to kill themselves. The Last of the Ancients, being the sole survivor, hurled the Sceptre into a cave.
