Scaramouch Van Dreg is first seen after he successfully manages to trap Skulduggery Pleasant in a dungeon. He attempts to taunt Skulduggery by sneering at him, but realises that Skulduggery was sleeping through his taunting, much to his shock. After walking Skulduggery up, Scaramouch continues his taunting by saying that Skulduggery has fallen into the clutches of his most deadliest enemy.
Skulduggery interrogates Scaramouch by asking him if he is plotting to use the Crystal of the Saints to bring back the Faceless Ones. Scaramouch denies, saying he never worshipped the Faceless Ones. After realising this, Skulduggery claims that there has been a misunderstanding, claiming that they never wished to capture Scaramouch. Scaramouch feels confused about this and, furthermore, angry, when Skulduggery admits that he doesn't view him as an arch-enemy by comparing him to Serpine and Mevolent. Scaramouch argues saying that he is as smart as Serpine and tells Skulduggery that he wishes to take over the world.
Skulduggery questions him, by asking how he will handle being the ruler of the world. Scaramouch explains that he intends to be the only human to ever use magic by draining the magic from every other sorcerer in the world, by using one of the Lost Artifacts. Scaramouch reveals that the artifact is a bug that can drain magic from sorcerers just by biting them. Skulduggery suggests that the bug might not even be inside the box that it is housed in. With this suspicion, Skulduggery tricks Scaramouch into letting the bug out of the box. When the bug isn't moving, Skulduggery crushes it.
Valkyrie then enters the room and overpowers Scaramouch. She upsets Scaramouch by claiming that she doesn't know he is. Skulduggery and Valkyrie them chain him up and leave, telling him that the Cleavers will come around to take him into custody.
