Chapter 1[]
The story begins with a boy named Jamie sitting in the living room of a home, texting back and forth with a friend Ethen. Jamie decides to go to bed early. As he lies in bed, a sinister creature appears and begins to talk to her. It talks about how its heart has been broken, while Jamie keeps insisting that the creature does not exist. The creature finally says that when your heart is broken, you take yours. Shortly afterwards, the creature appears at Ethen's.
A month later, the Bentley with Skulduggery Pleasant and Valkyrie Cain drives into the small Irish town of Terrmoncara. Valkyrie gets out and visits a café to get a cup. The same creature appears again, influencing a man named Mikey, who attacks Valkyrie. After a short scuffle, Mikey is lying on the ground. Valkyrie leaves the café and goes to Skuldaggery, who is waiting at the Bentley. Skulduggery notices that Valkyrie got into a fight because she was stealing. Then they talk about the mood in Terrmoncara, that all the residents are filled with fear and sadness. Valkyrie mentions that three children were murdered in ten months. Skuldaggery notices that the people are hiding something, he can tell by the way they walk. The rainbow dust reveals that magic is in the air. Evil.
Somewhere in a field, a farmer is driving his tractor, while next to him sits the creature that killed Ehten, ordering him to get his junk feint and shoot her in the head as a warning.
