The Quest was the first video game released on the Skulduggery Pleasant Website. It involved trying to follow Gordon Edgley's clues.



Premise[]

Be the first to take part in the Skulduggery Pleasant Quest! Get exclusive content, and maybe win cool stuff!

If you've read the book, then you know that Gordon Edgley dies. If you haven't read it, then we've just totally spoiled it for you. Only kidding - he dies quite early on, and there are lots of exciting things that happen after that. You should get on with reading it, really, instead of wasting your time with this boring page where all you can do is have a chance to win really cool stuff.

If you have read the book and you know that Gordon Edgley dies then you also know that he leaves Skulduggery a coded message to help him find the Sceptre of the Ancients.

But here's the thing: Gordon Edgley didn't leave just one code, he left several secret codes for Skulduggery and Stephanie. Your quest will be to discover all the secret codes, enabling you to unlock FREE and EXCLUSIVE content on the Skulduggery Website. We're making the first code really easy; it's DARK (see, we said it was easy).

Gameplay[]

To play ‘The Quest’ and enter the competition for a chance to win a Nintendo Wii and iPod Touch the player needed to register. The Game had to be played with keyboard and mouse, using the cursor keys to navigate around the mansion. To pick up an item, they just had to be walked over by the player.

Items collect on the way gave access to clues, points or downloadable goodies.

The game consisted of four main chunks, tied together into a quest.

The player could choose between playing as Skulduggery or Stephanie/Valkyrie.

Hub[]

The player had to explore Gordon's mansion and collect various items.

Spot The Difference Minigame[]

Basic spot-the-difference game. The differences are randomized for the sake of replay value.

“That horrible little man Fergus has been pocketing the silverware again. Now is your the chance to test those detective skills!

To start, use the left and right arrows at the top of the screen to survey the scene. When you think you’ve spotted a difference simply drag one of the white circles (in between the arrows) with your mouse onto either room. If you’re correct the circle will stay but if you’re wrong it’ll disappear.

Drag the circles to highlight the missing items.”

Magic Levitation Minigame[]

A physicsy lift ’em up. The player had to train up their magical levitation ability until they could chuck the item they needed out of the window.

“Use the mouse to direct your magic. Click and hold to that push objects around. Try starting with something light like a box of matches if your magic is weak.”

“You got the matches - well done. Now you know the basics, you're ready for something a little bigger. Try to get the candle out of the window. Take it easy and you'll get there. You might find it helpful to get it onto the shelf first to steady it.”

“Well done, you got the candle. Keep going with your training. The skull should be within your abilities now. Your magic is getting stronger all the time.”

“That's all the training you need! You should be able to get the chest now, and hopefully inside will be the key you're after. Even with your powerful magic, the chest will still be pretty tricky to lift. Direct your magic as smoothly as you can to keep it under control.”

“Well done you’ve got the chest and the key inside. You must now make your way back into the mansion and find the locked door that will now open. Good luck you’re only one step away from retrieving the Golden Sceptre. You can also return here whenever you like, to perfect your magic skills even further.”

Cave Exploration[]

Skulduggery Quest Caves

A simple stealth game. The player had to avoid stepping into the sight of the Hollow Men as they make their way through the cave to find the final object, the Sceptre of the Ancients. Scattered around the caves were gems that could be collected to unlock wallpapers, mp3s and screensavers.

“That’s a Hollow Man over there. A minion of Serpine. They're unpleasent things, but none too bright. Keep out of sight and he'll never realise you're there. Stand in his gaze for a second however, and you'll be in trouble!”

“You've been seen by a Hollow Man and ejected from the caves! Time to try again. The Hollow Men patrol the same route over and over. Watch them carefully and plan your movements to stay out of their gaze.”

“There are many gems to collect in these caves. They're often guarded by the Hollow Men, but they're worth the risk as they usually contain special goodies. Collect them all to find wallpapers, mp3s and screensavers!”

Plot[]

"Someone very close to you, Gordon Edgley owner of this grand estate, recently passed away. We need to find out whether he died of natural causes or whether something more sinister occurred. You’ve decided to remain in his house after the wake to investigate the causes of his death further. However, before we can unleash you on this quest we must discover whether you are up to the challenge. Gordon was a wealthy man and we are sad to inform you that some of his family have been stealing his valuable belongings whilst paying their so called respects…"

The quest starts out with the player having to prove their detective skills by winning the Spot The Difference Minigame in Gordon's study. After they have won they are told by the game to check the caves below the estate to find the Sceptre of the Ancients only to instead find the cellar door leading to the caves locked. The player is told to check the groundkeepers house for the key.

"Hmm thats interesting. You are going to need to find a key to get this lock open! Normally the groundskeeper can help with this sort of thing. He lives in a separate house to the mansion, but still within Gordon Edgley's estate."

The groundkeepers house is locked as well and the player has to win the Magic Levitation Minigame to obtain the key and return to it to the cellar where they can now enter the caves. After avoiding the Hollow Men and finding the Sceptre Of The Ancients the plot of 'The Quest' is completed, yet the player can still continue exploring Gordon Edgley's estate at their leisure.

Information Tidbits And Character Flash's[]

Presumably these could be unlocked by collecting various items scattered across the map.

"The Council of Elders.

For every country in which there is a magical community, there is a Council of three of the wisest and most respected sorcerers. They operate out of the “Sanctuary”, their base of operations, from where they pass the laws, supervise the army of Cleavers, and assign cases to the various detectives and agents they have at their disposal."

"The Hollow Men.

Mindless creatures of evil who, while looking human, are merely a papery, leathery shell, bloated from the inside by the foulest of gases."

"The Book of Names.

A single volume that reportedly contains the three names for every living person on the planet. Quite how the Book gathers its information, nobody knows. The Book is kept behind a mystical shield."

"The War.

Official records show that the last war between sorcerers lasted for over three hundred years. It began when the sorcerer Mevolent refused to curtail his attempts to bring the Faceless Ones back into our reality. The magical communities all over the world were torn in two- those who worshipped the Faceless Ones sided with Mevolent, and those who didn’t, rose up against him."

"Elementals.

A discipline of sorcery that allows the user to manipulate the four elements of fire, water, air and earth."

"Adepts.

A separate discipline of sorcery that itself splits off into a potentially endless series of magical abilities, usually performed to inflict pain."

"The Faceless Ones.

Dark gods who once ruled this world, beings of incredible power driven by cruelty and hate. They were eventually driven out of this plane of existence by the first

of the human sorcerers, but they wait on the edges of what we know. Waiting to return."

"The Ancients.

The first of the human sorcerers, the first mortals to discover and wield magic. Although their demise is recounted in the myths and legends of the

magical communities, there is still no solid evidence to explain their disappearance."

"Playing with Fire Character flash!

Kenspeckle Grouse has been leading the way in Magic Science for centuries. Although he grumbles a lot, he can heal practically any injury, and he’s always conducting bizarre and upsetting experiments. A true genius, as he would say himself."

Billy-Ray Sanguine is a killer-for-hire, a self-assured assassin skilled in getting to targets no one else can get to. His easy smile, good looks, and strong Texan drawl are all in place to distract from the fact that deep down inside he’s a complete and utter psychopath."

Trivia[]

  • The Munchkin Army is a sequel to this game. Both were made by Hyperlaunch.
  • It was removed in 2012, however, the link can be retrieved using the Wayback Machine.
  • It was possible to read a deleted scene from 'Playing With Fire' either via unlocking it via the game or via the website the game was hosted on.
  • 'Skulduggery Quest' took about six weeks to develop whereas the usual development time for promotional games range from a few days to one and a half weeks, making it a massive project compared to other games of this kind.
