The War of the Sanctuaries is a conflict between twenty-six Sanctuaries around the world, fought in 2013 from August to October.
Tensions between the Supreme Council and the Irish Sanctuary grow for years, and war is finally declared after the murder of Bernard Sult by the Children of the Spider, who attribute this action to the Irish Sanctuary. The Sanctuaries of the other Cradles of Magic, Africa and Australia, soon join the war on Ireland's behalf.
Twenty-one Sanctuaries against three Cradles is close to an even match, until the Cradles suffer a devastating loss at the Battle of the Keep. Shortly afterwards, a treaty is signed, and both sides ally against the growing threat of the Warlocks.
Main Events[]
- Defensive Shields are raised around Ireland.
- The Supreme Council ordered Mantis to find a way in. He uses the Midnight Hotel.
- Tanith Low and the Monster Hunters attempt to disable the hotel. Mantis' forces get through.
- The Dead Men go to France to reclain The Engineer. Australia and Africa joins the war on Ireland's side to protect their own interests.
- Mantis was led into a trap at an abandoned fort, but the preemptive attack went wrong when Dusk murdered Moloch, the only one who could control Skulduggery Pleasant's reinforcements: the vampires.
- Mantis pushed the Irish mages back and captured or killed many. Valkyrie Cain was interrogated until she escaped.
- Fletcher Renn was captured by witches and trapped in Africa. Skulduggery and Valkyrie went to free him but Valkyrie succumbed to her inner self and disappeared for weeks.
- Ghastly Bespoke and Anton Shudder are killed by the Man with the Golden Eyes.
- The Man with Golden Eyes' plan goes wrong when Charivari and his forces attacked Roarhaven. The following battle results in the collapse of the Supreme Council.
- The Accelerator goes into its final phase and would destroy the world unless a soul, willingly given, was sacrificed.
Outcomes[]
- Ireland managed to prevent another catastrophe.
- Darquesse saved China Sorrows from death, tortured Erskine Ravel and departed.
- Skulduggery Pleasant asks Valkyrie Cain's reflection to help him hunt Darquesse down and kill her, if necessary.
- China is elected Grand Mage of Ireland.
- Many Sanctuaries lose a member of their council.
